The CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care has been updated to reflect changes to national training standards and current expectations within early learning environments. This page explains the transition from CHC30121 to CHC30125 and what it means for students choosing their training.
Why the qualification was updated
Vocational education qualifications are reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect real workplace responsibilities and current regulatory requirements. Updates are made so graduates are prepared for the situations they are most likely to encounter once they are working in the sector.
As part of this process, CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care has replaced CHC30121 as the current national qualification.

What has changed from CHC30121 to CHC30125
The update focuses on strengthening how future educators recognise and respond to situations where children may be at risk. While the overall structure of the course remains familiar, one core unit has been updated to better align with current responsibilities in early childhood settings.
Key changes include:
- CHC30125 now supersedes CHC30121
- The core unit CHCPRT001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk has been replaced with CHCPRT025 Identify and report children and young people at risk
- Greater emphasis on clear reporting processes and appropriate documentation
- CHC30125 became effective from 22 December 2025
These updates help ensure students are trained in line with current expectations within the sector.
What has stayed the same
Although the qualification code has changed, the purpose and outcomes of the course remain consistent.
Both CHC30121 and CHC30125:
- Prepare students for entry-level roles in early childhood education and care
- Require a minimum of 160 hours of vocational placement
- Include 17 units of competency, usually 15 core units and 2 electives
- Are nationally recognised qualifications
- Provide a pathway into the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
Study pathways after completion
Graduates of either qualification can progress into further study. Both CHC30121 and CHC30125 are accepted as the prerequisite for the CHC50125 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, including CHC50125 and the previous CHC50121.
Which qualification should you take
For students enrolling in 2026 and beyond, CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the current qualification and the version now being delivered. Training providers are expected to transition their delivery to this updated course so students graduate with the most relevant skills and knowledge.
Students who have already completed, or are close to completing, CHC30121 can be confident their qualification remains valid and nationally recognised.
