Why First-Aid Training is Important?

Safe Work Australia states that First Aid in the Workplace (Code of Practice) and refresher training in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) should be undertaken annually and First Aid qualifications  should be renewed every three years. 

1. Why is First Aid Training important?

We never know when an injury, illness or an accident can strike. It can occur at home, workplace, school, public location or in a community setting. Therefore, it is recommended to have a basic knowledge of First Aid so that you can help the casualty in an emergency situation.

If you are qualified to provide First Aid, you can stabilise the casualty’s condition which can stop the deterioration of the condition through taking the right actions to manage the situation until medical assistance arrives.

2. Who can get help from First Aid?

You may need to provide First Aid in various settings such as swimming pools, factories, schools, early childhood care centres, playgrounds, aged care centres, disability care centres, retirement villages, construction sites, beach areas and even in your own home.

3. How can First Aid assist?

You may encounter accidents at any time. In many instances, you can provide comfort to the casualty and prevent the situations from getting worse such as a minor burn, sting, bruise, muscle pull, choking, or a road accident. In these conditions, you may have to apply basic but essential First Aid.

4. How can a trained First Aid person manage a situation?

First Aid training helps you manage the situation in a calm, confident and controlled manner. You will be able to provide emotional support by providing reassurance which will make the person requiring First Aid to feel more secure and it can reduce their anxiety levels.

5. Is First Aid a job requirement?

Many care service organisations require their staff to have First Aid training. As part of the new Code of Practice, in low risk workplaces, one First Aider is recommended for every 50 workers. For high-risk workplaces, it is one to every 25 staff.
