How to Get a Childcare Qualification Without Experience

Dreaming of a career in childcare but worried about not having any experience?

Don’t let that hold you back. In Australia, you can gain a nationally recognised childcare qualification, even starting from scratch.

Enable College will guide you through your journey and will equip you with proper training, hands-on learning, and support, you’ll be well on your way to a rewarding job in this growing industry.

Whether you’re passionate about working with children, looking for a career change, or wanting to enter a field with strong job prospects, let us give you a step-by-step guide to help you get started—no prior experience needed.

1. Choose the Right Qualification

The main childcare qualifications here in Australia are:

  • Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121) – This is the entry-level qualification for those who want to work in childcare. It covers fundamental skills such as supervising children, creating educational activities, and ensuring safety in a childcare setting.

The course takes 8 weeks with 35 hours per week and 160 hours of work placement to complete the full-time course, and about 26 weeks with 8 study hours per week and 160 hours of work placement for the part-time course.

Completing this qualification allows you to work as a childcare assistant in daycare centres, kindergartens, and family daycare services. This also serves as a pathway for Certificate IV in School Age Education and Care (CHC40113) and Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50125).

  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50125) – This is a more advanced qualification suited for those who want leadership roles in childcare. It includes deeper knowledge in areas such as curriculum planning, child development, and team management.

The course is offered full-time or part-time and on a blended learning model and includes 280 hours of work placement.

This qualification has possible outcomes of being an Early Childhood Services Coordinator, Lead Educator, Centre Director, Family Day Care Provider, or even starting your own childcare business.

Some universities may give you credit for your Diploma, allowing you to fast-track into a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Teaching. If you’re more interested in a leadership or management role within early childhood services, you might consider studying the CHC60215 Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management instead.

Most people start with the Certificate III, which does not require prior experience. It is beginner-friendly and allows you to later progress to a diploma to move forward in your career.

2. Enrol in a Recognised Course

Many registered training organisations (RTOs) offer childcare courses. When selecting a provider, ensure that it is Nationally Recognised and approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). Here at Enable College in Adelaide,  you are assured that your qualification is valid and accepted across Australia.

Some popular providers include:
Private colleges – These institutions provide childcare training with flexible learning options, sometimes at a higher cost than TAFE.

Online training organisations – Ideal for students who need to study at their own pace. Some online courses include virtual classrooms and remote support.

Check the course structure, fees, and testimonials like this from a student in Enable College will help you find the best option for you.

“I had a very good experience. The trainers were patient and took the time to make things clear, while the support staff were so helpful and cheerful. They arranged my placement and have found me a very good role that aligns with everything I have learned.” -Admire Mavuto

3. Study Online or In-Person

Most courses offer flexible study options:

  • Online learning – Perfect for those who have other commitments, such as work or family responsibilities. Online courses allow you to study anytime and anywhere, although you may need to be self-disciplined to stay on track.
  • In-person classes – Suitable for students who prefer a structured learning environment with face-to-face interaction. This method provides hands-on training and immediate support from instructors.
  • Blended learning – A mix of online and in-person study. This option gives you the best of both worlds, allowing flexibility while still receiving direct guidance from trainers.

4. Complete Practical Placement

Even without experience, you will gain hands-on training through a mandatory work placement. This is a critical part of your childcare course and provides real-world experience in a childcare centre.

Most courses require:

  • A minimum of 120 hours in a registered childcare centre. Some courses may require more hours, depending on the qualification level.
  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC) – This is a legal requirement in all Australian states and territories. It ensures that you have no criminal history that would prevent you from working with children. You must apply for this check before starting your placement.
  • A First Aid Certificate (HLTAID012) – Many childcare centres require students to have first aid training, which is often included in the course curriculum.

Some training providers assist in arranging placements. At Enable College we help and make sure that you are supported every step of the way and ensure that work placements will provide you with practical knowledge and potential employers.

5. Apply for Government Support (Subject to eligibility)

The Australian government provides financial assistance to help students afford their childcare training and studies. Support options include:

  • VET Student Loans – Available for Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care students. This allows you to study now and repay later through the tax system once you start earning above a certain income threshold.
  • Subsidised training – Some state governments offer subsidies for childcare courses, reducing tuition costs. Eligibility depends on factors such as residency and employment status.
  • JobTrainer funding – A federal initiative providing free or low-cost training in high-demand industries, including childcare. Availability varies by state and territory.

The Eligibility Criteria vary for every region. Checking the institution and government agencies for specific requirements of the program you are interested in is recommended. Enable College can assist you and answer some of your questions from eligibility to flexible payment terms through our Friendly Team.

6. Gain Experience While Studying

If you want to boost your resume and confidence before completing your course, consider:

  • Volunteering at a childcare centre – This provides exposure to a real childcare environment and helps you build connections with potential employers.
  • Babysitting – Caring for children in a home setting can develop essential childcare skills such as communication, patience, and problem-solving.
  • Assistant roles in daycare facilities – Some centres hire unqualified assistants to support staff. These roles offer great on-the-job learning opportunities and may lead to permanent employment after qualification.

Even small amounts of experience can make a big difference when applying for jobs after completing your course.
